Tamar Richards-Thomas is another one of our 2018 Scholarship Recipients.  See her letter below, where she expresses her sincere gratitude and thanks.

Dear Sir or Madame:

I express my sincere gratitude to everyone who organized and make AWMA Paul Complin Memorial Scholarship Dinner a great success. I am very humbled and elated to be one of the three recipients of the AWMA Paul Complin Memorial Scholarship 2018. This event was a great opportunity to network and meet other students in the field as well as professional members of AWMA.

Paul Complin who served selflessly to make this organization and award possible is an inspiration to all of us to continue his work. Paul Complin is also an inspiration to me because of his work related to air quality issues and its impact on the environment. This inspiration is another reason I want to continue my studies in the field of air quality as it relates to dust processes.

Again, thanks for your generosity and support. I am happy to be one of the recipients of the AWMA Paul Complin Memorial Scholarship 2018.

Thank you for all of your time and effort involved in organizing the scholarship; it was a great experience to meet so many students and professionals working towards a sustainable future. Thank you as well for your generosity in hosting the event and providing prizes to award winners; I am extremely grateful for the recognition and I thank you for supporting my decisions to pursue a career in the environmental field. 

As I transition back to working life after my masters I will be sure to take an active role in the AWMA; your organization embodies the motto of "lift as you climb" and I look forward to supporting the next generation of students and innovators.

Thank you once again for your support. I look forward to crossing paths in the future.

MOECC updates the Sulphur Dioxide Air Standard

As announced on the Environmental  Registry of Ontario, on March 20, 2018, the MOECC has updated the sulphur dioxide air standards and introduced Upper Risk Thresholds as part of the regulatory framework to better protect human health and the environment.  In addition, they have clarified requirements in the regulation for assessing operating conditions with a focus on addressing emissions of contaminants during transitional operating conditions (TOC) and added a tool to require incident modelling of industrial facilities.

The updates the air standards for sulphur dioxide are as follows:

  • A 1-hour average air standard of 100 micrograms per cubic metre of air (μg/m³) for sulphur dioxide, based on respiratory morbidity associated with exposure to this substance
  • An annual average air standard of 10 μg/m³ for sulphur dioxide, based on vegetation damage with exposure to this substance

Federal Regulatory Updates | CAAQS

The Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) have been passed, as per Dec 9th Canada Gazette Notice.

  1. ppb = parts per billion by volume
  2. The CAAQS for NO2 for the year 2020 come into effect on the day following their publication in the Canada Gazette, Part I, and remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2024.
  3. The CAAQS for NO2 for the year 2025 will come into effect as of 12:00 a.m. on January 1, 2025.
  4. A review of the CAAQS for NO2 will be undertaken periodically.
  5. The national ambient air quality objectives for nitrogen dioxide (maximum desirable, maximum acceptable, maximum tolerable) that were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, on August 12, 1989, are rescinded on the day of publication of this notice in the Canada Gazette.
