A&WMA Ontario Section - Practitioners' Group

In an effort to promote understanding, consistency and environmental compliance, a sub-group of practitioners has been working to develop Best Practice Documents regarding compliance with the Air and Noise regulations and guidelines in Ontario.  Reporting to the Practitioners’ Group, this committee documents what practices have resulted in a more timely or efficient response from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE).

The committee, with the support of the MOE, has met regularly since 2008 to identify “guidance gaps” and has provided clarification in the form of Best Practice Documents that are located on this website.

The purpose of the initiative is to support and assist practitioners by documenting accepted Best Practices so that practitioners can learn by example.  It is envisioned that using the Best Practices when making applications for Section 9 Air and Noise or preparing ESDM Reports will achieve the following:

  • Increase the quality and completeness of incoming applications;
  • Meet the MOE’s expectations for demonstrating compliance;
  • Increase the consistency amongst applications; and
  • Improve the timeliness of reviews.

The committee is comprised of six members with two members each from industry, government and consulting.
Currently, committee members include:

Monika Greenfield Vale Inco Limited Monika.Greenfield@valeinco.com
Lubna Hussain Petro-Canada lhussain@petro-canada.ca
Christina Labarge MOE, Standards Development Branch Christina.Labarge@ontario.ca
Derek Sullivan MOE, Environmental Assessment and Approvals Branch Derek.Sullivan@ontario.ca
Sarah McQuaig Golder Associates Ltd. smcquaig@golder.com
Sarah Tebbutt Conestoga-Rovers & Associates smtebbutt@craworld.com

The success of this initiative depends on input from the practitioners and their accepted Best Practices.  We encourage all interested persons to prepare draft practices that can be added to the available list after review by the group. For additional information contact Sarah McQuaig at smcquaig@golder.com.
